Last week, President Obama unveiled a new strategy for NASA and the future of United States space exploration at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. In the early 60’s President Kennedy chose the moon as our new frontier and inspired Americans to rise to the challenge, thus creating the space race with the Soviet Union. In the year 2010 we have a President who shares many of the same qualities as President Kennedy. He understands the importance of American innovation and determination to achieve great human accomplishments. Though sending human astronauts to Mars has been a goal of past modern Presidents, Bill Clinton & George W. Bush included, President Obama understands that our success on this issue is dependent on setting smaller achievable goals that will propel us forward. He understands that exploration of deeper space will go ahead and that our involvement is vital to our long term economic position and leadership on the world stage. Barack Obama is a pioneer of the NEW new frontier & I believe that with President Obama’s visionary leadership, a manned mission to Mars will become a reality.

“By the mid 2030’s I believe we can send humans to orbit Mars and return them safely to Earth. And a landing on Mars will follow. And I expect to be around to see it.”

And I hope that he is.

In the fall of 2008, during a meeting at Rolling Stone in New York City, I had the pleasure of meeting Jim Marshall. Jim was in town to speak at NYU for a film screening about Johnny Cash at San Quentin, and showed up unannounced carrying his Leica. I appreciated him not only for his massive body of work, but for his extremely humble personality and his very presence in the room. Jim Marshall had a commanding presence and a firm handshake, and I feel lucky to have met him that day. As the meeting concluded, he followed the goodbye with “Look me up in the phone book when you get back to San Francisco- I’m listed. Call me and you can come by my house and we can talk some more.” What I will always remember, is that Jim Marshall was very eager to share his experience of success with a student trying to earn his own.

Jim Marshall 1936-2010
