Last week, President Obama unveiled a new strategy for NASA and the future of United States space exploration at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. In the early 60′s President Kennedy chose the moon as our new frontier and inspired Americans to rise to the challenge, thus creating the space race with the Soviet Union. In the year 2010 we have a President who shares many of the same qualities as President Kennedy. He understands the importance of American innovation and determination to achieve great human accomplishments. Though sending human astronauts to Mars has been a goal of past modern Presidents, Bill Clinton & George W. Bush included, President Obama understands that our success on this issue is dependent on setting smaller achievable goals that will propel us forward. He understands that exploration of deeper space will go ahead and that our involvement is vital to our long term economic position and leadership on the world stage. Barack Obama is a pioneer of the NEW new frontier & I believe that with President Obama’s visionary leadership, a manned mission to Mars will become a reality.
“By the mid 2030′s I believe we can send humans to orbit Mars and return them safely to Earth. And a landing on Mars will follow. And I expect to be around to see it.”
And I hope that he is.
